SP Energy Networks - Green Economy Fund
Decarbonisation of Transport
SP Energy Networks' £20 million Green Economy Fund (GEF) was established back in 2018 to kick start the ways both transport and heating are powered in Scotland.
They established the fund to help support the Scottish Government’s ambitious energy strategy that leads the UK's drive to a low carbon economy. This will ultimately mean a transformation in all forms of transport and traditional heating, will create new jobs and businesses across Scotland and help support Glasgow’s sustainable future. The £20 million we pledged back in 2018 has already supported a whole raft of initiatives that are showing real benefits for the customers and communities of Scotland we serve.
Looking to the Future of Transport
The GEF has supported 18 transport projects across Scotland to help drive the decarbonisation of transport. In Glasgow alone, SP Energy Networks' fund has committed £3.3 million to Glasgow’s Green Economy and sustainable future by supporting projects across a variety of areas, specialities and industries.

Powering Greener Commercial Transport
SP Energy Networks committed funding to four commercial transport organisations to help them introduce electric vehicles and reduce carbon emissions across the country. Through these projects we will purchase a total of 11 electric buses that will transport the customers and communities we serve – not only in comfort, but in a cleaner, greener way.
Case Study
In partnership with First Bus, they launched Glasgow’s first all-electric vehicles on a commercial bus route that’s existed since the 1960s. These buses are operating in Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone supporting the goals of Sustainable Glasgow.
Community Transport Organisations
SP Energy Networks supported a number of Community Transport Organisations through the fund, all with the aim of directly benefiting the local communities they operate in. By supporting these projects, they've allowed the purchase of 26 electric vehicles (including electric minibuses), to help to reduce carbon emissions alongside supporting our communities.
Case Study
Community Transport Glasgow (CTG) applied for funding to upgrade its ageing fleet from diesel – to all-electric passenger vehicles. Through GEF funding, the charity introduced five 100% electric minibuses and two fully electric people carriers, becoming Glasgow’s first ever transport organisation with all-electric minibuses. CTG currently provides transport solutions to 75,000 passengers a year who now benefit from this project.
The Last Mile: Encouraging the Uptake of Bikes
SP Energy Networks support three organisations with a focus on using bikes as a way of reducing carbon emissions. They've provided 47 eBikes to help encourage communities to consider new modes of low-carbon transport.
Case Study
Through our partnership with SoulRiders – a cycling based charity – we’ve directly purchased five e-cargo bikes, providing Scotland’s first integrated cargo bike delivery and waste service.
SoulRiders is one of Glasgow’s most exciting green projects, helping improve the city’s air quality with world-leading technology. The new e-bikes will provide a solution to many traffic and pollution issues in Glasgow by reducing the number of delivery vehicles on the streets, helping the Glasgow become the UK’s first Net Zero city.
