Glasgow Centre for Population Health
Glasgow Centre for Population Health is a Scottish Government funded partnership between NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Glasgow City Council, and the University of Glasgow. Since 2004, our aims have been to generate insights and evidence, support new approaches, and inform and influence action to improve health and tackle inequality.
Working with a wide range of partners, we conduct research of direct relevance to policy and practice; facilitate and stimulate the exchange of ideas, fresh thinking and debate; and support processes of development and change.
Aims:
- To create and test new models for understanding the patterns, and causes, of Glasgow's enduring poor health while identifying potential solutions and actions for improvement.
- To bring excellent and innovative population health research together with the work of policymakers and service providers to accelerate and strengthen processes for better and more equal health.
- To develop greater capacity for effective action to improve health through educational processes and events, provision of regular communications, and organisational and professional development.
- To be a focus for the exchange of ideas, independent thinking, analysis and debate about population health and health inequalities, linked with similar activities elsewhere in the world.
Sustainability
We are committed to reducing our energy use, carbon footprint and waste. We have changed a number of working practices to support a more sustainable office culture and continue to challenge ourselves about what more we can do in our day-to-day practices.
Our blog describes some of the actions we have taken in adopting a more environmentally sustainable working culture, including reducing our paper use and office food waste, using more sustainable transport options and providing locally sourced, vegetarian food at our events.
We looked at how people and organisations in North Glasgow could work together to become more resilient in the face of climate change.
Our Work on Climate Change
Various aspects of our work relate to climate change, both in terms of adapting to and mitigating its effects. In particular, efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, encourage more sustainable and active forms of travel and improve the sustainability of the food system will have positive impacts on health and the environment.
We have hosted seminars to highlight and stimulate discussion on climate change and health (Impact of weather on human health - current and future issues and Health, climate change and sustainable development) and we have worked with communities in Glasgow to explore their views of potential solutions to climate change. The Weathering Change action research project looked at how people and organisations in north Glasgow could work together to become more resilient in the face of climate change and other future challenges. The Small Grants Programme launched in March 2020 was aimed at schools, non-profit organisations and community groups working with children or young people. Its purpose was to support the production of creative outputs to communicate the views of children and young people on the impacts of climate change on health and wellbeing.
